Ogee Edge Shaker Kitchen Cabinets in DC
Today we’re looking at a kitchen cabinet installation. The style is a Shaker style with a slight modification. Instead of just a square inside corner at the frame around the panel, there is a decorative ogee. The Shaker style cabinets are generally known for a very minimalist overall aesthetic. This more elaborate particular detail goes slightly against the minimalism of the default Shaker style. As a design, though, it still works. It just works a little bit different than the typical minimalist nature of the more traditional Shaker cabinets.
Even though the Shaker style cabinets are clearly an American derived style, the doors can actually be installed on a European style carcass. The box of the cabinet is often referred to as a carcass. The doors then enclose that box. The difference between the European style boxes and the American style boxes is that the American style boxes have a stile and rail at the front face. Essentially, the stile and rail create the frame.
Many kitchen designers consider this slight variation on the Shaker cabinets to be an element that makes it a transitional style. The Shaker boxes, while minimalist, are a bit basic. This slight detail of flare makes it less basic and just utilitarian looking.
One of the other details about the shaker style cabinets that makes it a bit utilitarian is just that it’s common. The Shaker style can be found in many kitchens throughout DC. It’s not unique or rare like some other styles. You see them so often in so many different places. One of the things that we like about the basic simplicity of the Shaker cabinets is that it can meld well across a wide range of different home styles.
For example, if you have a house that has a mid-century look, or a Victorian classic historic style, the Shaker style cabinet can work with both. The aesthetic flair of this extra detail makes it a bit more fit for older classical styles, but it’s still can work in a wide range of surrounding elements.
The cabinet door hardware shown here is a brushed nickel square edge bar pull. This style, like a basic Shaker style, can also fit within a wide range of adjacent design elements. If it were more ornate or less simple than it would probably fit better with classical styles.
Here though this type of hardware can fit with both contemporary and classical.
The picture below shows a close-up view of the small trim sticking between the cabinet door panel and the door frame. This profile is often referred to as an ogee. It is similar to an overload, but has an eased stroke at the turns in the profile.
The shadows of the thin molding create an element of visual detail. In the picture of both, when you’re looking at it very close up, you kind of lose the overall effect. When you look at it further back as shown in the next picture below, you can see the added detail created within a small panel in one of the thin drawer base cabinet drawer faces.
When you compare this relatively minimalist style with a different cabinet door, even in a similar color, but with a raised panel, you can see there’s a pretty stark distinction.
The picture below shows a more traditional raised panel door.
The profile along the edge of the style and rail of the cabinet door is similar to the ogee style shown at the Shaker style doors above, but in this case, that detail at the edge of the joint between the stile and rail and the raised panel is more elaborate. Also, the raised panel in the center of the door adds another level of detail and has a reveal at the perimeter of the center panel.
From that reveal at the center panel, there is a graduated taper that extends to the edge of the panel set into the style and rail. All of these elements together constitute the cabinet door, yet again, though, there’s another detail that’s visually observable in this particular style of cabinet door. Unlike a European type door configuration, this door sets on top of the larger style and rail at the perimeter of the cabinet carcass.
