Top Design Considerations on Kitchen Renovations

In today’s article, we discuss several important factors to consider when designing a renovated kitchen space for optimal functionality and aesthetics.

  • Layout Planning: Begin by assessing the available space and considering the kitchen layout that best suits your needs. Common layouts include galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, and island kitchens, each offering unique benefits. Choose a layout that maximizes efficiency and facilitates smooth workflow between key areas such as the cooking, preparation, and storage zones.layout planning for kitchen renovations

A single wall kitchen, also known as a one-wall kitchen, features all appliances, countertops, and storage along a single wall. This layout is commonly found in smaller homes or studio apartments where space is limited. It offers a simple and efficient design, with everything within easy reach along a single stretch of wall.  The downside to this type of layout is that there is generally very limited countertop space and the kitchen is less ergonomically useful than other layouts because it is missing the ergonomic kitchen work triangle layout with efficiencies between the refrigerator, sink area, and the stove or cooking area.

In a galley kitchen, two parallel countertops and workspaces are situated opposite each other, with a central aisle in between. This layout maximizes efficiency by allowing for a continuous workflow between the two countertop areas. Galley kitchens are often found in narrow or small spaces and are favored for their compact and functional design, but they are not as open and free feeling as other layouts.

An L-shaped kitchen features countertops and cabinets arranged along two adjacent walls. This layout provides ample countertop space and storage while allowing for flexibility in design and traffic flow. L-shaped kitchens are often versatile and can accommodate various kitchen configurations, including islands or dining areas.

A U-shaped kitchen consists of countertops and cabinets arranged along three adjacent walls, forming a U shape. This layout offers maximum storage and workspace, with appliances and fixtures conveniently situated around the perimeter. U-shaped kitchens are well-suited for larger spaces and provide plenty of room for multiple cooks to work simultaneously.  Beware, however, inside corner cabinets are low utility per dollar, in other words these particular base and wall cabinets are particularly expensive and are less functionally useful then adjacent non inside corner cabinets.  Essentially, you are paying more money for lower usefulness for these types of cabinets and this layout has two inside corners, whereas L-shaped kitchens only have one.

An island kitchen features a central island or peninsula that is separate from the perimeter countertops and cabinets. The island serves as a multifunctional workspace, providing additional countertop space, storage, and seating options. Island kitchens are popular for their versatility and ability to serve as a focal point for cooking, dining, and socializing.

A G-shaped kitchen is similar to a U-shaped layout but includes an additional peninsula or partial fourth wall, forming a G shape. This layout provides extra countertop space and storage while enclosing the kitchen on all sides for a cozy and efficient design. G-shaped kitchens offer ample room for meal preparation and cooking while allowing for easy access to appliances and supplies.  The fourth side does not really confine or constrain the overall layout of the kitchen, but adding that fourth side does create an additional inside corner which has a diminishing marginal utility or usefulness factor in the overall square footage of cabinet space. Again, here, this is an example of less useful cabinet space at an additional cost.  Effectively homeowners or clients are paying more for a little bit less.

Each kitchen layout offers unique advantages and considerations, allowing homeowners to choose the configuration that best suits their space, needs, and lifestyle.

  • Storage Solutions: Adequate storage is crucial for keeping the kitchen organized and clutter-free. Incorporate a mix of cabinets, drawers, and pantry space to accommodate various kitchen essentials. Consider innovative storage solutions such as pull-out shelves, corner cabinets, and vertical dividers to optimize storage capacity and accessibility.
  • Appliance Placement: Strategically place appliances to streamline cooking processes and minimize unnecessary movement. Position the refrigerator, sink, and stove in a triangular layout known as the kitchen work triangle, coordinating optimized workflow between these essential areas. For added convenience, consider built-in appliances and integrated refrigerator and dishwasher designs for a seamless look.

  • Lighting Design: Proper lighting enhances the functionality and ambiance of the kitchen. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to illuminate different areas effectively. Install overhead lighting fixtures such as recessed lights or pendant lights for general illumination, task lighting under cabinets for food preparation areas, and decorative fixtures to add visual interest.  Don’t forget to include sealing lights above the countertop space because often designers include lighting just in the Center of the kitchen which when working at the perimeter countertop creates a shadow, cast down from people’s head onto their hands making them work with their hands in their own shadow. This creates a very poor ergonomic condition. In recent past weeks, we took a very close look at multiple different options and configurations of kitchen lighting in redesign and renovation.  You can take a look at that particular blog article at the following link.
  • Material Selection: Choose durable and easy-to-maintain materials for countertops, flooring, and cabinetry to withstand the rigors of daily use. Materials such as granite or quartz countertops are not the only options for durability.  Hardwood or tile flooring are regarded or associated with longevity but grout in tile can be stained or damaged and needs upkeep.  Natural hardwood floor is susceptible to damage from moisture and requires upkeep and refinishing.  Refinishing hardwood floors is particularly complicated around cabinets because it’s hard to work next to wall-base, toe kicks, and shoe molds.  material selection for kitchen renovations

Interestingly, the material supply chains in our commercialized markets tell us that these materials are always better and more durable, but it’s simply just not the truth.

Plastic laminate type countertops are somewhat durable, and can save a considerable amount of money when comparing direct cost of materials, but plastic laminate has a shorter lifespan and has a significantly lower quality aesthetic. Plastic laminate also has only limited options for configuration and installation and will not work for all sizes and shapes which must be customized in a modern kitchen.

  • Ventilation and Safety: Proper ventilation is not always required by the building code, yet can be very effective for removing cooking odors, steam, and grease from the kitchen and maintaining indoor air quality. In many cases a range hood with adequate ventilation capacity, can be installed to effectively vent cooking fumes to the exterior. Additionally, prioritize safety features such as childproof locks on cabinets and drawers, anti-slip flooring, and rounded countertop edges to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Accessibility: Design the kitchen with accessibility in mind to accommodate users of all ages and abilities. Incorporate features such as adjustable-height countertops, pull-out shelves, and lever-style faucets for ease of use. Ensure ample clearance around islands and countertops to accommodate wheelchair users and individuals with mobility aids.  Even if you never have plans to use a wheelchair or any type of special accessibility devices, it could be a important detail in future resale of the property. Even where handicap accessibility is not required, the extra space can be a selling point to people who just appreciate the ample openness.accessibility for kitchen renovations
