There’s a chance that this particular post might start by debate. Some people are strongly in the single bowl kitchen sink camp and some other people are strongly in the double bowl camp. There are valid arguments for both sides of the debate of which is better.
Having had a lot of experience with both of them, we have our own opinions, as well. We see some advantages and some disadvantages of both options. It isn’t necessarily cut and dry.
Some of the basic obvious advantages and implied disadvantages follow in the list below:
Double Bowl Benefits
Multitasking
Zoned Hygiene
Drying Space
Lower Water Consumption
Single Bowl Benefits
Uninterrupted Space
Sleek Aesthetics
Maximizes Cabinet Space
Easier to Clean
Putting this list together, we’ve tried to root out redundancies by not calling the advantage of one a disadvantage of the other, but it all works the same way in reverse. In other words, as you’re reading each list of advantages, you can apply the reverse or inverse of those items to the opposite or alternative type of the sink and understand the downsides. To start with a quick example, the double bowl sink has an advantage because the two different bowls allow for multitasking but the single bowl sink has a disadvantage in that everything must be merged together inside of one bowl so it doesn’t allow for multitasking.

When you look at a different perspective of multitasking, one side can be used for soaking while the other side can still be used for washing and rinsing. This is helpful because it’s not really convenient to do both the same single bowl at the same time. Sometimes dishes that have really deeply baked food will need a deep soak before they can be scrubbed off easily.
Another one of the advantages is that one bowl can be used as a pre-rinse area. If you’re entertaining a large group, for example, or having a large dinner with family, you can at least get a quick wash on some of the dishes to get the chunks of food off of them before you have time to wash the whole sink full of dishes. Then you can pick them out one by one from the pre-wash side to the wash side and give them an actual wash with soap. That separation can be helpful.

You can also use one of the bowls as a drying space, a place to stick dishes after they’ve been washed. Personally, some people just prefer having a separate dish rack, but in a hurry this might be a practical option that offers a good solution. It can be convenient.
When soaking, with the smaller bowl, for example, as you can see in the picture below on the right hand side, you can reduce the amount of water you need to submerge plates and dishes. Some plates and dishes are not just flat enough to sit low in a sink. For mixing bowls or baking pans, for example, it might be better to really submerge them in water. In the case of a moderately large bowl, if you can fit into the small sink, you can save a lot of water because of the volumetric difference between a small compartment of a double bowl sink.
Compared to the entire large compartment of a single bowl sink it requires a significantly higher amount of water, volumetrically.

You can get a quick sense of this volumetric difference, just by working through the numbers in a simple sense. If the small compartment of the double bowl sink has a 9 inch height, and is 13 inches wide and 16 inches deep, in total it will have a volumetric size of roughly 8 gallons. Technically, the corners and edges of the inside of the bowl or rounded so it’s slightly subtracts from the total calculation.
In contrast, if a large single bowl sink is roughly 27 inches wide x 19 inches deep, and has a 9 inch height, it will hold almost 20 gallons. With corporate welfare systems quickly coming to take away almost all of our water to give it to billionaire data center corporations, water will become more expensive. Then we will be economically pressured to use less of it. This one aspect of the double bowl sink is becoming a stronger selling point. It can submerse dishes at the same depth without having to use nearly the same amount of water.
