We’ve looked at many different design elements for kitchens and bathrooms here on our website. Today we’re looking at a really interesting wallpaper with a squiggle line that runs in a repeating type of pattern. It’s called “Wiggle Room”. It looks interesting and different, but it’s hard to say whether you should love it or hate it. At first impression and definitely looks interesting or unique.
This isn’t the only interesting detail of the design of this bathroom though. If you look closely, you can see that all the walls around this particular feature or accent wall happen to be painted a semi-gloss black color. It’s almost pure black or jet black. That pairs well with the wallpaper because the wallpaper has high contrast. The squiggle, the pattern within the wallpaper, happens to be a black color similar to the black paint on the surrounding walls.
This particular overall design theme might be a bit controversial. It’s not for everyone, not everyone will like this unique look. They did a good job keeping to some consistency though. In other words, even though the design choice might not be one that everyone likes, they executed it well. You can agree or disagree, but there’s signs that we can point to to support this argument. First, many of the other elements of the bathroom design details share the same characteristics of bold consistent solid black colors or solid white colors. For example, the medicine cabinet, vanity light fixture, bathroom vanity faucet, drain, and cabinet hardware all share this same solid black color. Often, the faucet and frain cover will be supplied together, in a kit from the same manufacturer. That’s not always the case though. Sometimes the drain will have to be purchased separately and in the process of procurement it isn’t always easy to find a drain in a dark color. It not only has to match in finish, for the aesthetic to work properly together, but needs to fit the same type of configuration as provided by the particular bathroom vanity sink. These elements might sound easy, but they also might add additional layers of complication to the design and execution of the construction of the bathroom.
The vanity hardware not only matches in color, texture, and sheen, it also compliments the minimalistic type simplicity of the style of the faucet. Here they selected a relatively simple drawer pull design, like metal angles attached to the top of each drawer face. The drawer pulls have some similarity to bar pulls, except for that angle. The front face of the pull returns back to the drawer through a solid plane instead of two individual small post mounts.
Most types of wallpapers are installed from the bottom up or the top down with vertical seams. Here though, if you look very closely in the picture below, you can see a horizontal seam. This is a bit different than usual. This seam happens to be mostly through the uninterrupted white area of the design instead of going through many of the black squiggle loops.
We think the seam here could be better hidden, if the installation had been a bit better executed. We understand the design decision to install the seam through a space that is mostly white. It makes it much easier to hide the seam because where the design elements have to line up, in the illustration, they are only needed at fewer points. A seam through a continuous uninterrupted illustration is very complicated if the area of the seam is filled with details. If walls were built perfectly flat, square, and true it would make the installation of wallpaper much easier. The reality though is that most walls and wall-like surfaces are built with significant variation.
In the next picture below, you can see the black paint on the wall at the side of the bathroom. The wall is painted corner to corner. There is a towel bar installed from the nose of the vanity countertop towards the door. There’s also a bright white receptacle installed beside the vanity top.
The semi-gloss sheen of this paint gives a harsh and ugly reflection. We often recommend the use of semi gloss sheen paints for accents and trims. We even use semi-gloss paint on doors, quite often. Semi-gloss paint performs better in some ways. It has a tendency to resist staining. At areas, such as doors, where people have a tendency to touch the door often, it’s easier to clean the door. If the door were painted with a flat paint, it would stain from the grease that’s natural on people’s hands.
