Waterfall Countertop Edges

Enhance Your Space with Waterfall Countertop Edges

Today we’re looking at a few different kitchen color schemes. The first one we will look at today a white and gray pairing of colors.  This kitchen is very contemporary with a waterfall countertop edge.  Recently in the past several weeks, we looked at a few different examples of a variety of different types of countertops, here on our website. Kitchen countertops are interesting because they are available in a wide array of different types of materials.

Kitchen countertops can also be found to suit almost any design and color scheme. Options range from natural stone varieties with shiny or gloss type sheens to soapstones with leather type textures, even in natural stone work. Other common materials options include tile coverings, formica or laminate type materials, and even natural wood surfaces.

Today, we’re also looking at something a little bit different, waterfall edge countertops. Many of the countertops here on our website that we have looked at in the recent past are so traditional in that they run in a horizontal field or plane. Waterfall kitchen countertops basically run in that same horizontal typical work surface type plane but they meet a side panel.

Instead of passing over and above the edge of a substrate cabinet, waterfall countertops join a side panel made from the same material as the countertop itself. That joint is typically created by mitering the top horizontal surface to the vertical side surface. If done very well, the two surfaces can join in a visually near seamless type of way that continues the same pattern. Sometimes natural stones will have a veining or distinct type of unique visual pattern. When the countertop work is done carefully, the veining can almost appear to be continuous, even in changes in the planar field of the worktop surface.

As a side note, some other design details of this kitchen layout make the kitchen very contemporary. The bar stools have a very shallow back, yet they have a bar used as a footrest that connects, not to the stand or the center of the stool, but to the seat of the stoolThe stool is made with a glossy chrome finish and the stools continue this design detail by also having the hardware made with a high sheen chrome finish. Some of the details also make this look like a more minimalist  contemporary type of design.

There are no ornate or elaborate moldings.  Almost every detail in this design is close to a right angle. The countertop edges themselves have a easing or a pencil edge which allows the hard edges of the countertop the terminate without a sharp edge, yet still has a minimalist look.  Even the artwork on the wall in this kitchen is minimalist in that it has no contrast or busy shapes within the art itself. It looks just like the wall, plain and white.

The next kitchen, showing in the picture below, is very similar, it has a contemporary type minimalist design with sleek edges and relatively monolithic colors. It’s not busy. There is veining in the countertop surface that provides a sharp contrast of a black stone surface with a distinct white but relatively thin vein that runs through like a ray of lightning.

In kitchen and bathroom designs where dark colors are used heavily and or predominant, it helps to also use additional or additionally bright lighting.  In fact, when very dark finishes are used, if the lighting is well designed, the interior space won’t even necessarily feel dark. Instead, the overall feel might be relatively sleek and modern. Here, even though the backsplash, cabinet surfaces, and countertop surfaces are dark, the surrounding walls are painted white, which brightens the space. Also, there’s a wood veneer finish accent panel in the center of the island. This natural wood color softens the hard and bold surfaces and brings a bit of warmth into the overall feel of the space.

In this kitchen as well, at the island, a waterfall wdge has also been used. From this angle you cannot see the top of the countertop, but the veining matches so that it almost appears to be a continuous surface. This type of extra planning has a visually stunning impact that changes the overall feel of the space.
