Wood Countertops – Mixing Natural Textures and Lacquer

Transform Your Space with Durable Wood Countertops

This past week we looked at a particular kitchen with a blue cabinet lacquer finish, with an opaque base and a gold accent, mixed with a slightly off color near brass finish hardware. In some ways, you can say that the kitchen that we’re looking at today has even more interesting selections or finishes. Firstly, it’s a wood countertop which isn’t, in itself, entirely unique, but wood has some quirky characteristics that make it somewhat questionable for usage in wet areas like kitchens. Wood also comes in a variety of different species and finishes, some of which can hold up much better to the exposure of moisture.

If you look closely though, you’ll notice that the floor, which you can see in the left hand side and corner of the photograph below, in this kitchen area, is actually also a wood flooring. At least, it looks to be wood flooring, but in reality it’s actually a locking-floating flooring which is much less expensive. The finish of that floor pairs well with the countertop. Both are a weathered wood, grey-ish, finish.

As well, locking-floating floorings generally have some resistance to moisture, but materials for kitchens and baths must be chosen carefully because materials for flooring made with high density or medium density fiber are generally very susceptible to moisture and will quickly become damaged from exposure to even limited amounts of water. Damage in those cases can take shape in the form of cupping and minor warpage that, while relatively limited overall, can ruin the aesthetic of the flooring.

If you look closely at the face of the cabinet door shown in the picture here below, you can see this is your relatively simple shaker style cabinet.  There are a handful of different types of Shaker cabinet styles, even within the particular area of Shaker cabinets.
There is a relatively simple Shaker style but also this particular style which is sometimes referred to as a Shaker Elite
. Here, you can see this chamfer between rail in the stile of the face of cabinet doors abd or drawer front faces.

This chamfer detail is small, about ⅛” yet it creates a vertical line that continues vertically for the whole length of the cabinet face.  It’s like an accent that,  in my opinion, detracts from the otherwise minimalist aesthetic nature of this cabinet.  Some people prefer additional ornature (ornamentation or decorations to visually accent architectural elements) and flare.

From a design perspective, the pairing of a white lacquer cabinet finish with a gray or weathered wood type aesthetic, might work.  Going back for decades, pairing natural wood finishes together with white surfaces is common. In this particular case, it even looks a bit fitting into our contemporary type of style. The hardware on most of the cabinets and drawers and doors of these cabinets are a brushed stainless steel bar pull type of hardware. This finish also does an okay job to match the kitchen stove which has elements of a brushed stainless finish as well.

One advantage to these types of minimalist styled bar pulls is that this style would blend well with almost any type of finishes or surfaces. Here, the white shaker style cabinets are also relatively minimalist. All together though, this relatively simple design works well because it melds, even between the basic contemporary Shaker cabinet and the edgier salvaged looking gray wood finishes.

Bar pulls are a bit easier to grab a hold of then small knobs.  In the kitchen that we looked at last week, they paired a brass door pull with a gold pinstripe at the range hood. Personally, I don’t think these elements necessarily worked well together, but everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

That design, last week was very busy because it was tying together many disparate elements. Here too, as you can see in the picture below, there are three different types of colors and finishes, just here, for example, in a photograph of one small area.  Yet, the brushed stainless, the white lacquer, and the grey weathered wood, even all together, at least don’t clash in a visually screaming sort of way. They actually instead kind of work together.
