ToggleCreate a Stunning Kitchen with Two Kitchen Cabinet Colors
Today we’re looking at a particular kitchen that uses several swing up cabinet doors. In the future, we will look at other cabinets with other examples of different types of soft clothes hinges. Here though with a cabinet door that swings upward, the type of hinges chosen really change the operation and comfort of ease.
These particular cabinet doors happen to be a wood grain type aesthetic, but they’re actually made from a laminate type of material, similar to formica or melamine.
The cabinets above the stove and the range hood, shown in the next photo below, are similar to the two cabinets to their right, shown in the picture above. The cabinets in the picture above though, to the right of the stove, happened to be a pair of stacked cabinets, each taller than the cabinets above the range hood.
These cabinets are in a horizontal position. Traditional cabinets in a vertical position generally have intermediary shelves spaced approximately 12 inches apart on average but have flexibility to be moved within set increments and be partially customized accordingly. These horizontal cabinets can also have intermediate shelves installed, but when stacked on top of each other, they work like a set of intermediary shelves already.
You can see the vertical door configured cabinet to the left of the range hood. One of the few significant differences between the typical traditional vertical stacking and the less common horizontal cabinet is that vertical cabinets can have a pair of doors instead of a single door. Traditional vertical cabinets can also come with a single door as well. However, the horizontal cabinets with the swing up cabinet doors can only have a single door, because of the simple mechanics of the configuration and layout.
This particular set of cabinets happens to use bar pull type hardware. A wide range of different types of hardware are applicable for this style of cabinet.
The next picture below shows those same bar pulls in a horizontal position, up close, at the lift up style cabinet doors.
The biggest difference in quality, with this type of cabinet, depends more on the hinge than almost all other factors. The hinges shown in the picture below will work okay, but we recommend at least using soft close hinges and also or alternatively really recommend at least using swing-up or flip-up hinges, so both hands can be free when the cabinet doors are open. We explain some of the different types of hinges available, below.
Parallel lift hinges, are one the most common in standard kitchen cabinets, move the door straight up while keeping it parallel to the cabinet face. This style works for medium-height doors and require minimal clearance above the cabinet. These types of hinges pair well with gas springs or counterbalance mechanisms for smoother closing to reduce slamming.
Swing-up or flip-up hinges can work a bit simpler, and are normally a less expensive option, where the door swings up in an arc motion. While these types of hinges generally require more clearance above the cabinet, they work well for smaller and lighter doors, and can also be paired with friction hinges or gas struts.
For taller cabinets, bi-fold lift hinges can offer a decent solution by folding the door in the middle while lifting. The mechanisms can be more complex, but they require less clearance above and can handle heavier doors, so they solve an important problem with tall up swing cabinet doors.
Stay lift hinges are another alternative option. They use a single pivot point where the door swings up and out as the door is lifted. This style.of hinges need a greater clearance above, but theynwork worj a simpler mechanical design, so they can work well for small to medium doors and are often paired with pneumatic or spring supports.
If you look very closely at both the hinges and the hardware on the face of the doors, you might notice there’s a slight difference in the finish. The door pulls are made with a brushed nickel finish and the hinges are made with a satin chrome finish. The finishes of the hinges are generally limited and come in fewer different colors and styles, but the door pulls can generally be procured in almost any or most colors and finishes.
