Choosing the Perfect Kitchen Sink Faucet: A Comprehensive Guide

Over the past month or so our blog articles have focused on kitchen countertops and sinks, we looked at a variety of different types of kitchen countertops that can be installed in kitchen updates or renovations and we also took a look at different types of sinks. The sinks and countertops have a wide range of different options and materials, colors, and styles. Those styles range from modern minimalist to more traditional and contemporary designs.

Today we’re going to switch topics a little bit and take a look at faucets used in kitchen design and renovation.  Particularly, today, we’re going to focus on the different types of options because there are several different types of faucets to pick from, just like other details and design choices in a kitchen.

Basic 3-hole kitchen sink faucets were very common, decades ago and they’re still common here in Washington DC in many homes which haven’t had kitchen updates or renovations, like a leftover detail from the end of the last century.  Today though, in renovations, single hole kitchen faucets are much more common and in many cases those more minimalist type faucets also include a pull-out sprayer on a self-retracting weighted hose.

The picture below shows a simple single hole gooseneck kitchen faucet that has replaced a more traditional 3-hole faucet.  The wide base plate at the bottom of the faucet covers the pre perforated holes at the sides of the two compartment stainless steel drop in sink.

The faucet shown in the picture above is a straight spout faucet, but the next one shown in the picture below stands much taller and has a gooseneck and returns downward. These gooseneck faucets are much more common today than they were years ago, but there are many kitchens here in Washington DC that have never been renovated and we actually see the old style standard straight spout faucets pretty often still, at least in the old kitchen BEFORE we renovate them.

The gooseneck faucets allow more clearance to hold dishes and pots and pans a little bit taller or higher than you would in a shallower sink with a standard straight faucet. Not only are they more convenient, but many people prefer the aesthetic of the gooseneck style faucets.

In most cases the gooseneck style faucets can have a retractable hose installed inside of the gooseneck itself. This avoids having a separate hole and or extra element standing up installed at the countertop and therein has a bit of a more minimalist aesthetic.  The usefulness of a retractable hose is obvious, like the large sprayer type faucets used in commercial kitchens, a pullout faucet can also be used to articulate and direct the spray of water within a sink. That helps because you can basically bring the sprayer down to the dishes instead of having to bring every dish up to the nozzle of the faucet.

Some of the other common types of kitchen sink faucets are wall mount faucets which are mounted to the wall and essentially can clear up a little bit more of the countertop space. It’s not that the countertop space necessarily needs to be available behind the sink for storage or for preparation usage, but it does make the countertop easier to wipe down and clean without faucets mounted through the countertop.

Unlike the kitchen sink faucet shown above, the one below is a more contemporary simple L-shaped faucet but it still is mounted and stands relatively high to allow a degree of clearance to maneuver and manipulate dishes and pots and pans while washing.

Pull out faucets, similar to the styles seen in commercial kitchens that are in a shape like a gooseneck but are able to be withdrawn and also manipulated or bent around to aim at the desired area of a large sink. They’re similar to the faucet shown in the picture above, but have this specific difference of flexibility and are generally much larger.

In an upcoming blog article, we’re going to look at the finishes and the color of the options for faucets and how these different finishes can also be coordinated to complement and or match the drawer pools, hinges, and other aesthetic details of the kitchen design.
