In the pursuit of modern convenience and cutting-edge technology, the kitchen industry has seen a surge of high-tech gadgets and appliances that promise to revolutionize our culinary experiences. Some advancements are very effective and helpful. However, not all technological advancements are practical or necessary, and some can be considered overkill, leading to inefficiency and unnecessary expenses. Some examples of ineffective and unnecessarily high-tech kitchen gadgets and appliances that can possibly be considered overkill follow:
- Refrigerator Cameras and Inventory Tracking: Some refrigerators now feature built-in cameras that allow users to remotely view the contents of their fridge via a smartphone app. (The Silicon Valley TV show had a funny plot thread about something like this.) While this may seem convenient, it often comes with a hefty price tag and raises privacy concerns. (And, we aren’t necessarily trying to say you need to be scared of all devices that are constantly tracking, recording, compiling and storing your usage data, but there are legitimate and substantiated concerns.) Additionally, manually tracking inventory can be just as effective and far more cost-efficient and even more accurate.
- Smart Kitchen Appliances: From smart ovens that can be controlled remotely to coffee makers that can be programmed from your phone, these appliances promise convenience but often fail to deliver significant benefits over their traditional counterparts. The added complexity and potential for connectivity issues can outweigh the perceived advantages, making them an unnecessary investment for many households.
- Voice-Controlled Kitchen Assistants: While voice control can be handy in some situations, dedicated kitchen assistants like the Amazon Echo or Google Home can be redundant, as most smartphones now offer similar voice command capabilities. Additionally, the accuracy and reliability of these devices in noisy kitchen environments can be questionable.
- Automatic Pot Stirrers: These gadgets claim to eliminate the need for manual stirring during cooking, but they often struggle with thicker sauces or larger pots, and their potential for malfunctioning can create more problems than they solve. A simple whisk or spoon can often accomplish the task more effectively and without the added complexity.
- Robotic Bartenders: While impressive in concept, robotic bartenders are expensive and can be impractical for home use. They often require precise measurements and specific ingredients, limiting their versatility. For most households, traditional bartending tools and skills can be more cost-effective and enjoyable.
- Connected Kitchen Scales: These scales pair with apps to provide recipe instructions and ingredient measurements, but they can be unnecessary for experienced cooks and may even hinder the natural flow of cooking. A simple, well-designed kitchen scale can often serve the same purpose without the added complexity. At the time of writing this article, in May of 2024, I looked up the cost of these scales. The basic digital scale runs about $20. (Be aware that Amazon is no longer the cheapest place to buy things any longer.) There are some so-called “smart” scales for as low as about $44, so unlike the robotic bartenders which start at thousands of dollars, there’s less money to lose, in the purchase of a fancy digital scale. Do your own research on the particular products, of course, but maybe the price is (or isn’t) worth it.
The list above includes just these few examples, but it’s clear that sometimes people end up not even using some of the fancy features of this expensive kitchen gadgetry. The other part of this issue or context is that even the mid-range appliances today are coming packed with baseline technological improvements that make the experience of use and efficacy and efficiency of the typical kitchen appliances work much better but at a standard or baseline or mid-range type of price point. Going above and beyond to make your kitchen amazing might be worth it in certain areas but it isn’t always worth it in the specific area of high-tech gadgets.
In the article this coming week, we’ll talk more about the type of kitchen appliances and technological improvements which are becoming more of a standard baseline, even for basic or mid-grade types of appliances. Our point here isn’t to say that techie, fancy, over the top, ultra-high-end appliances should be avoided. Our point here is really just that with the lower range rising and the highest range almost going to the point of overcomplication, we may recommend considering both ends of the continuum of options before assuming that the high-end, fancy, wizbang gadgetry will make everything perfectly easy and solve every kitchen challenge and problem.
