9 Ways to Make Your Bathroom Remodel Eco-Friendly

Switch to Low-Flow Water Fixtures

  • Discarding outdated faucets and showerheads and switching to low-flow models is a quick and affordable solution to conserve water and play your part in conserving the environment.

Low-flow plumbing fixtures use less water than conventional ones without compromising on quality. For instance, a low-flow showerhead may reduce the amount of water used by up to 2.5 gallons per minute compared to a regular showerhead. Over time, that represents considerable water and financial savings.

Install a Water-Saving Toilet

  • Did you know toilets consume the most water in a home? However, you can reduce the amount of water used for each flush by up to 60% by swapping your old toilet with a water-saving model.

Dual-flush toilets are an excellent alternative since they enable you to select between a low and high-volume flush, per your requirements. This implies you can conserve even more water when you simply need a quick flush.

Use Natural Materials

  • Eco-friendly bathroom remodeling also calls for the use of sustainable and natural materials. For example, bamboo and reclaimed wood make fantastic alternatives for countertops and cabinets.

Since these are natural or recycled materials, they significantly reduce the amount of garbage dumped in landfills. For flooring, you may go for ceramic tiles or natural stone.

  • Not only are these materials environmentally safe, but they are also aesthetically pleasing while being easy to clean and maintain!

Choose Low-VOC Paint

Many traditional paints contain the chemicals volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have a detrimental impact on human health as well as the environment. Luckily, the market offers abundant options for low-VOC paints that are a much safer alternative.

  • There are infinite benefits of low-VOC paints, but primarily, they contain natural ingredients and are devoid of the harmful chemicals in traditional paints.

Hence, these paints are safer for your health, and they contribute to reducing environmental pollution by lessening the amount of pollutants released in the atmosphere while painting!

Use Recycled Materials

  • Using recycled materials for your bathroom remodeling project is a great way to reduce the environmental impact of the process. Just a little research can help you find recycled tiles, countertops, and even equipment for your bathroom.

This helps conserve resources and protect the environment by reducing waste in landfills!

Use LED Lights

  • LED lights are an excellent option for any eco-friendly bathroom makeover since they are durable and energy-efficient.

They consume less power than conventional bulbs and last longer, which means less waste. Additionally, LED lights are available in various hues and designs, allowing you to find the ideal look for your bathroom.

Incorporate Plants

  • Adding plants to your bathroom can significantly improve the indoor air quality. Since they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the atmosphere, they act as a natural air purifier.

Plus, a healthy environment is not the only perk of adding plants to your bathroom – they also contribute to your bathroom’s aesthetics!

  • Spider plants, bamboo, and aloe vera are just a few examples that can be added to a bathroom since they don’t require plenty of care and can flourish in wet and humid settings.

Install a Skylight

Natural light is a wonderful way to reduce energy usage and make a place seem spacious and welcoming.

  • By installing a skylight, you can allow natural light in your bathroom and lessen your dependency on artificial lighting. Skylights may also offer natural ventilation, lessening the bathroom’s moisture buildup.

Repurpose Old Materials

eco-friendly bathroomOne of our all-time favorite bathroom remodeling tips is to repurpose old items. This helps decrease waste and gives your bathroom makeover charm and originality. The choices are unlimited when it comes to repurposing outdated materials in your bathroom.

  • One interesting idea is using an old mirror as a frame for a new one. The existing frame may be sanded down, given a fresh coat of paint, and a new mirror can be attached to the middle. This can create a distinctive and fashionable item that adds a hint of personalization to your bathroom!

Many other bathroom accessories and equipment can also be similarly repurposed. For instance, you can use old plumbing fixtures to act as towel handles or hooks.

  • The best part about repurposing old materials is that it lets you create a personalized space according to your style and preferences. Additionally, it is a waste-efficient and eco-friendly option!

In conclusion, eco-friendly bathroom remodeling is a terrific method to modernize your home and contribute to environmental protection.

By implementing the nine suggestions outlined in this blog, you can save waste and resources while designing a lovely, sustainable bathroom that you’ll enjoy for many years.

The tile used on his bathroom is an unterminated or hexagonal tile with an embossed texture. Unlike most wall tile installations which terminate all the way up at the corner of the joint between the wall plain or have a termination strip, this tile is installed with a raw staggered edge. Sometimes an edge like this is called a floating edge. If you look in the picture below, you can see that the tile at the vertical inside corner of the wall is cut to fit the shape provided by the wall plane. The top of the tile though is left raw to just follow a staggered edge of the hexagonal tile itself. The staggered unterminated edge of the tile doesn't necessarily look bad, in this example. They've been careful during installation to not let mortar ooze out in a way that looks rough or unfinished. At the lower tiles though, in the picture below, you can see the top of that unterminated edge. There are two problems with that kind of unterminated edge. First, you can see the raw edge of the tile itself. Since this is not a solid piece of natural material, the front or exposed face of the tile is a different color than the internal composition or body of the tile. When it's exposed like this and doesn't have a terminating edge you can see that difference which makes it visually apparent that it's not a real material. It's a manufactured material. The second problem with this type of unterminated edge is that the mortar itself has a thickness of roughly 1/8 of an inch. When applied with a 3/16 inch Notch trowel, the mortar becomes compressed but still even when flattened as much as possible there still is a thickness of that mortar. Once it is dry and cured, you can still see the thickness of that mortar. In almost all cases of tile installation, unlike stone masonry or even brick masonry, the tile mortar is not intended to be exposed at the joints. In between joints, in the field of the tile, the mortar will be covered with a colored grout. In this case, the tiles are set so tightly that there is almost no visible grout line between them. The grout used is a color that's very similar to the tile and the effect works. In some cases when the tile has a variation of significant color difference between the ranges of colors within the tile it's difficult to have a grout that complements or blends. Here though because the colors continuous across the face of the tile and the grout has been matched so well, you can't even hardly notice it. You can see that joint or between the back of the tile and the wall very clearly in the next picture below. You can see there's a very thin line with a black dark shadow between the tile and the wall. In some cases, when a tile is left unterminated at the edge, a gun applied caulking can be applied across the edge, smoothed, to almost make it look intentional. Sometimes in bathrooms without really good ventilation, if there's steam from hot water, that steam can condensate and build on the wall. When the vapor droplets accumulate enough they'll roll down the wall and in this case they'll sit on top of and get back behind the edge of the tile. That's one of the downsides, here though, this bathroom is just like a powder room with a toilet and a sink, but it doesn't have a shower. Most of the steam moisture buildup in bathrooms comes from showers. In the picture below you can see the distance between the other side of the ceiling and the top of the tile. Here they were at least smart enough to bring the top of the tile to a point that's above eye level. Typical eye levels are around 60 to 75 inches above the finished floor height. The mirror used above the bathroom sink has an integral LED light that wraps the perimeter of the round mirror. It basically provides a dramatic high contrast to the adjacent tile. That high contrast accentuates the texture of the tile. This tile has this intentional embossed or relief texture which is well employed when lit in a way that emphasizes the texture. The next picture below shows a close-up view of that edge at the top of the tile.
