Dark Wood Grain Ceramic Plank Tile – Part II

Dark Wood Grain Tile Right for Your Space

This past week, we looked at this dark wood replicating ceramic tile. It’s not really wood at all, it’s just made it look like wood. This type of style became pretty popular about 10 years ago, but the fad sort of waned a bit because it’s not as popular today.  Fads have a way coming and going.

It might become popular again We also don’t want discourage people from using something like this. When using the right type of application it might look perfect. In fact understanding all of these different types of ideas, whether or not they’re the best or not, is still purposeful.

People learn about the options that are out there and then from there basically inform their inventory of potential ideas for their spaces. That’s the reason we care and why we’re talking about it today.

This past week, we talked about the form of the surface, basically the shape.  Here it’s made to look like it’s hand hewn. We also want to mention that the color here is particularly a relatively dark wood. It could definitely be a lighter color and there are several options available that have a lighter color.

The only caveat in using a light color faux wood type ceramic tile is that the lighter colors start to look a lot like earthtones. It’s intuitively confusing to have a wood grain with an earthtone type ceramic tile. Sometimes, if done right, with the right design, it might look great.  In other cases though it might look a bit odd and or not pull off the intended visual effect.

In addition to the shape of the surface, last week, we also mentioned that the shape of the tile surface is similar to texture, but not the same. Certain tiles might look a bit glossy and or smooth yet have a moderately high traction resistance factor. Essentially, they’re not as slippery as you might expect.

Other tiles might not look necessarily shiny for flat, but have all the slipperiness of something that looks perfectly shiny and flat. It’s really matters in areas that have tendency to get wet. Kitchens and bathrooms. Rooms like this definitely have a tendency to get wet at times.  Particularly where there are showers built into a bathroom floor system without a surround or a curb to separate the shower space, the tile has to be selected carefully to have a high slip resistance surface.

The third characteristic we mentioned was the sheen. We mentioned above that glossy tiles have a lower slip resistance, in general. It’s not necessarily consitent across the board, because they are exceptions. Here this particular tile has a bit of a satin or matte type of sheen which is not too shiny. Really shiny tiles may be classified or considered glossy. If they are a bit in between, they might have a satin sheen, or egg shell or semi-gloss type of sheen.  High gloss surfaces generally have a wet look.

We don’t recommend that in many cases. It can be a bit distracting and can reflect surfaces almost like a mirror in some cases. Also the wet look doesn’t always look good. Especially where there’s texture or shape in the surface, the high sheen of a high gloss or even semi-gloss will show all of that texture variance, excessively.  It generally won’t look good.  It can have a glistening look that amplifies imperfections instead of muting them.

Here, they chose a medium brown color grout. We generally recommend the grout be selected as one of the darker elements of the variation of the color within a tile. Here, this isn’t a bad selection. We’ve would probably like it to be a tad less colorful though and a bit more grey.  Even if it isn’t necessarily darker, you can tell that the darkest notes of color within this tile color range are a bit more gray in color than brown. The brown grout happens to have some red inside of the brown color, naturally, and here it looks a bit too warm, in our opinion.
