Advanced Chiaroscuro Design for Elevated Bathroom Style – Part II
This past week, we started looking at this particular bathroom, shown the next several pictures below. It’s a dark color bathroom, set within a set of relatively bright light sources. This past week, we talked a lot about the design elements in the overall theme behind this type of design. This week though we’re going to look more closely at some of the individual elements.
These particular plumbing fixtures happen to be touchless. That means that they don’t need any valves or handles to operate them. Simply by putting your hands underneath the faucet, water will make water come out. Although the exterior faucet has a matte black finish, it generally falls into this type of class of fixtures made with a brass body. In some cases the entire body of the faucet is made with brass because brass is durable as a material and also resistant to deterioration related to moisture.
One of the downsides of this type of modern fixtures is that they require a power source. They can sometimes be hardwired so they have a constant supply of power through line voltage and in some cases they can also be powered by battery or even a plug.

Last week, we also talked about the stone countertop. Here, we’re taking a look at the legs. Wall mounted types of sinks can, in many cases, be installed without supporting legs. Here though because the countertop is very heavy and extends far away from the wall, they’ve also installed a pair of quarter inch flat bar metal legs. These legs are each screwed to the floor to provide more stability. By comparison, Vanity cabinets also provide a floor support. In most cases though vanity cabinets are mounted to the back wall, yet not to the floor.

The sink bowl is made with a contoured stainless steel. The stainless steel bowl has a brushed finish which helps hide water stains. Often, typical drops of water can dry out and leave a deposit behind. Often hard water may leave a bit of a milky color deposit behind when it dries. The brushed finish provides a little bit of texture as opposed to a gloss shine. Polished metal has a shine and shows spots. By comparison the brushed finish hides water spots better. Essentially, it has a tendency to look a little bit cleaner, even when it’s not perfectly clean.

The underside of this sink is shown in the next picture below. Instead of being exposed bare metal, it has a covering on the underside which deadens sound and prevents scalding. When extremely hot water is run through the sink, that temperature transfers to the underside. This covering provides an insulation to dissipate and attenuate that temperature transfer.
If you were to pull in close and let your legs touch the underside of the sink, they wouldn’t be burned, because of this covering. Also as well, the drain is wrapped in an insulative cover to prevent scalding when in contact with skin. These protective coverings are often required for ADA compliance. Most residential applications don’t require ADA compliance, but here, this bathroom is made to meet the requirements for accessibility and use open to the public.

We talked a bit about the wallpaper in last week’s article. Here, we can see a better view of a wider area of that wallpaper. There is an artistic design that reflects paintings made decades ago by a particular artist. It shows an abstract type of view of the architecture of a cityscape. As well, the mirror is an elongated hexagonal shape which melds with the other cubist type of design elements.

The lights used in this bathroom are positioned on both sides of the mirror. Having multiple lights provides a more even illumination of the occupant or user of the bathroom. That’s important in a mirror because it provides a more even lighting and higher brightness.
The edge of the dark gray countertop has been caulked to the wall where the back of the countertop meets the wall. A black color caulk has been used. Often, we recommend using a caulking that either matches one surface or another where two surfaces of different colors meet. Here a third color has been introduced, but it does not conflict drastically with the two colors of the mating surfaces.

A direct view of one angle of the wallpaper follows in the picture below. We really like this particular wallpaper. Although wallpaper isn’t often used in many contemporary designs, here it works very well and brings a unique feature element to the bathroom.
