Cabinet Doors with a High Gloss Finish for Modern Style
Over time, here on our website, particularly in the past year, we looked at several different types of kitchen installations. Both kitchens and bathrooms can use similar styles of cabinets and countertops, but particularly with kitchens, the quantity of cabinets is much higher. Therefore, it makes sense that the particular style of the doors used in kitchen cabinets is very important to the overall design of the kitchen.
The different types of styles of kitchen cabinets and overall kitchen designs range from historic or antiquated to contemporary and modern with different types of design themes that are either specialty styles or muted or minimalist colors to other extremes such as wild, vivid and bright colors. In this particular case, the colors are just a simple white.
The cabinet door style is just a very simple flush panel. The exposed surfaces though are glossy. It has a high build clear lacquer on top of the painted wood-like doors which make it look like a modern manufactured material, not like something traditional. Instead, the high sheen almost looks a little bit like a reflective mirror. Some people think it looks sleek like a futuristic Jetson apartment and other people think the modern style looks visually disgusting.
In the picture below, looking at the pantry style floor to almost ceiling height cabinet stack, you can see the reflection of the ceiling lights on the face of the flush panel door.
Like most contemporary standard and semi-custom cabinets, this particular set of cabinets comes with a stock side maple veneer finish. As an alternative, if the edge or side of the cabinet is intended to be exposed, an additional overlay panel can be added with a high gloss finish as well.
Since the doors of the cabinets are flush style doors, they have a reveal between the top and bottom doors when set in a stack type layout. This particular reveal happens to be roughly 1/8 of an inch. All the doors must be adjusted though, after installation to be set true and level which will adjust each reveal.
In the next two pictures below, you can see a greater expanse of that maple looking finish on the interior of the cabinet boxes. The interior of the cabinet box is made with melamine or laminate, in most cases. These two different materials are both pretty similar. They are both made from synthetic or polymer type materials that are similar to plastic, but have a realistic looking photograph type image imprinted on the surface. In some cases it will even be a slight bit of faux texture; however, it is rare that the texture carefully matches the print of the grain.
There are a variety of different styles of hinges that work well for this type of cabinet door, the ones shown below are low cost hinges with a degree of adjustability.
In the picture below, you can see a bit of the interior of the standard carcass or cabinet box. This particular cabinet box, like many semi-custom or standard type cabinets also has a maple finish, similar to the default exterior box sides. There are a variety of different styles of hardware that can be used to dress or finish these cabinets. The metal finish of the cabinet pulls can be selected to match the other decorative design finishes around the kitchen. Some of the coordinating elements might be faucets, light fixtures, appliance handles, pot racks, range hoods, decorative accents like frames or a kick plate and exposed hinges and regular door hardware at the walls of the room.
If it were a bathroom instead of a kitchen, the metal finish of the cabinet pulls could be coordinated with elements like faucets and showerheads, typical bath accessories as well such as towel bars and rings, toilet paper holders, light fixtures, mirror frames, and drain covers. Ultimately, the goal would need to create a space that looks like all of these details were designed and built together as one. Even though, in reality these individual parts may have to be procured from a wide variety of sources.
