Simple Shelves Above a Toilet

Simple Yet Stylish Shelves Above a Toilet: Small Bathroom Upgrade Idea

Space maximation, is generally a pretty important topic, in bathroom design, here in Washington DC. Its not that the same issues of space and storage don’t apply to other aspects of buildings and homes, such as kitchens. The same issue of storage space is really important and a big discussion topic on design for kitchens as well.

However, bathrooms seem to be one of those places where we always need a little bit more space, particularly here in DC where home sizes are relatively limited, and the original layout of bathrooms, especially historic homes, was designed many years ago when lifestyles were a bit different. The original layouts didn’t always include tons of space, especially for storage and accessories. Nowadays, especially in our lifestyle, we have lots of accessories.   Also, as you’ll see in the pictures here today, a little bit of extra storage space can also provide room for some decorations and customizations of a bathroom.

Simple Shelves Above a Toilet

In the picture above, the top of the toilet tank is being used for house plants and a candle. House plants are very nice and simple feature to have, pretty much anywhere in the house. It’s particularly nice in the bathroom though because normally space can’t be afforded for simple accessories, decorations, and house plants.

The picture below shows three shelves above the toilet tank. Here these shelves are you for a combination of different things, mostly candles and decorations. These are nice accessory details to be able to have in a bathroom. It basically means that the bathroom is relatively organized and the additional space for storage is sufficient and ample. Often, when bathrooms are designed very simple ways come in there might be nothing more than a pedestal sink. A pedestal sink, itself, wouldn’t include any additional space for storage under a vanity cabinet, for example.

A vanity sink is basically set with a countertop on top of a square or rectangular cabinet.  The cabinet itself can hide or house the sink drain, fill tubes, shut off valves and sink stopper device.  Additionally, there’s generally a relatively ample cabinet, possibly even set with an intermediary shell from the inside of the cabinet which can be used to store a significant amount of bathroom types of things.

Some of the things typically found enclosed or tucked away in storage in bathrooms might include bars of soap, shampoos, lotions, creams, medicines, and a wide range of other items used in bathrooms. A degree of these things could be stored in medicinecabinets with a mirror, but medicine cabinets are generally much smaller and therefore limited in the space and range of items that can be stored within them.  For example, some of the large shampoo bottles, typically used nowadays, might not fit inside of a medicine cabinet.

For these reasons, a storage space under a bathroom sink might be particularly useful, and even with that space, additional areas of storage would be useful as well. A medicine cabinet, and wall shelves, particularly above a toilet tank might be set at particularly useful spaces in the bathroom.  Without the added storage installations, these wall spaces might be underutilized.  These spaces can be converted or used to optimize space by adding shelves like the ones shown here.

The picture below shows the bottom shelf. There’s three shelves, in this setup, overall. All of the shows have a projecting board used to store items above. There’s also a metal band around the edge of each shelf to prevent items from easily being knocked off or sliding off the edge of each of the shelves. The bottom shelf though has a thin bar that can be used to store hand towels or other small things as well.

This small detail is a nice added small feature. Often it’s useful to have a hand towel within reach.  Washcloth rings and towel bars are common in most bathrooms, but it’s generally very useful to have additional places or installations of washcloth rings or towel bars. Here, this shelf basically provides a double feature or function by having both a shelf for storage above or on top of the surface and also having a thin bar that can be used below for hanging hand towels or washcloths below.

The overall design motif for this particular bathroom is based or centered around a light blue and light gray color scheme. The decorations, both permanently built into the space and also with the accessories, complement one another. Here the shelves are stained with a light weathered gray color.

The tile wainscoting around the walls of the bathroom are original to the home, built roughly 100 years ago.  A tile wainscoting is similar to a more common type of wainscoting built with wooden panels, is a covering over the a portion of a wall, generally run or installed from hip height, or the height of s typical chair rail moulding down to the floor.
